Grant Helps Build ADA Playground

The Bristol chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities raised $804,560 in 2023 to support child-focused agencies, including Family Crisis Support Services, which received a grant to help build an ADA-compliant playground.

Nov. 17, 2023 — The Bristol chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities raised an impressive $804,560 in 2023 to support child-focused agencies across Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia.

At the annual “Night of Smiles,” these funds were distributed to organizations making a direct impact in their communities. Events such as the Drive for Charity Golf Tournament, Red Bucket Brigade, and Pinnacle Speedway in Lights contributed to the fundraising efforts.

Family Crisis Support Services (FCSS) received the $50,000 Jeff Byrd Grant, named after the late president of Bristol Motor Speedway. The grant will fund an ADA-compliant playground for FCSS’s new 72-bed emergency shelter in Wise County.

FCSS Program Development Administrator Michael Wampler emphasized the playground’s importance in helping children feel a sense of normalcy during difficult times. Speedway Children’s Charities Executive Director Claudia Byrd praised FCSS’s work and highlighted the value of creating welcoming, accessible spaces for children in crisis.
