Dec. 13, 2023 — Family Crisis Support Services (FCSS) celebrated the opening of its new Crisis Resource Center with a dedication ceremony attended by over 100 officials and supporters. This modern facility doubles the agency’s capacity to shelter individuals affected by domestic violence, sexual assault, homelessness, or disasters.
The center replaces an aging former mine office that was structurally unsound, offering improved living conditions and privacy for over 70 people. Five on-site homes include separate rooms and communal kitchens, significantly enhancing FCSS’s ability to serve the region’s growing needs.
Executive Director Marybeth Adkins credited the success of the $4.2 million project to a coalition of funders, including the Secular Society, which provided $1.5 million, as well as state and local partners. The project was made possible by a combination of persistence, community support, and expert planning.
Program Development Director Michael Wampler highlighted Phase 2 plans for expanded services, including a mobile medical services area and a central laundry facility.
With a sharp rise in regional cases of domestic violence, sexual assault, and homelessness in recent years, Adkins affirmed the center’s essential role in providing critical resources to the community.
